Play is important fir emotional wellbeing

I have studied feline behaviour extensively through a three-year postgraduate course, developing a strong understanding of animal emotional wellbeing and behavioural management. Although my main academic focus has been feline behaviour, I have always maintained a strong interest in behaviour across species.

Recently, I supported a dog diagnosed with separation anxiety through a remote behaviour consultation. The dog displayed distress behaviours when left alone, including barking, pacing, destruction of household items, and difficulty settling.

Using video assessment, behavioural modification strategies, environmental management, and targeted nutritional supplements, a structured support plan was introduced. The programme focused on reducing anxiety, building independence, and creating positive associations with alone time.

Working remotely allowed me to observe the dog within its normal home environment, where the anxiety behaviours naturally occurred. The owner supported this assessment with footage recorded from a home camera system. Regular weekly sessions, although relatively short at around 30 minutes, also helped provide the owner with reassurance, guidance, and confidence that the behavioural plan was progressing in the right direction.

Over several weeks, the dog showed significant improvement, with a noticeable reduction in stress-related behaviours and improved ability to remain calm when alone. The outcome was highly positive for both the dog and the owner.

In conclusion, this case demonstrated that a combination of behavioural modification, environmental management, and targeted nutritional support can successfully improve separation-related behaviours and enhance the wellbeing of both the dog and the owner.
